In your hospital bag, you’ll want to pack everything you need for yourself, your baby and your partner, for the duration of your labour and your stay in hospital. It can be helpful to have three bags, one for labour and one each for you and your baby after the birth. Your labour bag can include essentials such as comfortable clothes, high-energy snacks and massage oil, as well as a speaker and a familiar pillow to help you relax and feel at home.
After birth, you will probably be in hospital for a short length of time, ranging from a few hours to a few days, depending on your situation. You will be adjusting and getting to know your new baby, so it’s useful to make things as easy as possible by packing items that will help. For instance, if you are planning to breastfeed, you will want to make the most of your first few hours together to establish this and you will find that skin-to-skin contact and a good deal of patience make life a little easier. Breastfeeding can be challenging at first and it’s important to find the right support so that you and your baby can establish a good feeding routine.
Giving birth is often a long and difficult challenge, and looking after yourself as well as your baby will help with your recovery.
