Incontinence

Did you know that around 40-50% of people experience bladder incontinence during pregnancy? It can occur at any stage but is most common in the third trimester, as the unborn baby is growing quickly and puts pressure on the bladder. Finding solutions that help to combat this inconvenient and often embarrassing problem can help you manage it and prevent further problems from developing.

Tena Lady pads are an excellent choice to absorb leakage and give you peace of mind. These pads are available in different sizes and absorbencies and are designed to protect against leaks and odour, keeping you comfortable and secure all day. Tena Lady Pants are another option, designed to be worn as daily underwear to enable you to lead a full, active life without worrying about incontinence. They are disposable and have side tapes for easy removal.

Learning to identify and work with the muscles of your pelvic floor can help to prevent and manage incontinence during pregnancy and afterwards. You may be aware that you are developing pregnancy incontinence if you notice that you are leaking urine when exercising or laughing, sneezing or coughing, or you may find that you need to empty the bladder with urgency at times. This happens because the pelvic floor is weakened as the ligaments have softened during pregnancy and the growing foetus puts pressure on this area.

It can help to practise lifting and engaging the muscles of the pelvic floor, becoming aware of the three distinct sets of muscles that support this area. You should be able to isolate and engage the muscles around the urethra, the anus and the vagina separately, and this can help to build muscle tone in the pelvic floor and prevent stress incontinence. However, it is not ideal to over-tighten the pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy as it is important that you can relax these completely to birth your baby. Postnatally, you may find pelvic floor exercises helpful, or you may wish to see a physiotherapist if the problem persists.
